Postdoc in Applied Large Language Models for Advanced Banking Operations at University of Twente
The University of Twente is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a strategic project in partnership with ING Bank, focusing on the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) to advanced banking operations. This position is based within the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS), which is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach to technology and societal challenges. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment and collaborate closely with ING Analytics, a team of data scientists and engineers dedicated to integrating AI and machine learning into banking products and services.
The postdoc will drive innovation in three high-impact research streams: (1) quality assurance and confidence scoring for LLM outputs, (2) development of domain-specific language models for compliance-driven processes, and (3) context-engineering automation for agentic AI. The role involves designing, validating, and operationalizing next-generation LLM solutions to streamline banking processes, strengthen compliance, and scale agent-based AI systems. The research will be performed in close collaboration with ING Analytics, offering direct exposure to real-world financial technology challenges and solutions.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Natural Language Processing, Language Models, Information Retrieval, Deep Neural Networks, Computer Science, or a related discipline, and have proven experience with LLMs. The position requires working both at ING (Amsterdam) and the University of Twente (Enschede), and candidates must demonstrate strong teamwork, practical problem-solving skills, independent research ability, and excellent English communication. Non-Dutch applicants must provide proof of English proficiency via IELTS, TOEFL-iBT, or Cambridge CAE-C (CPE) certificates if their prior education was not in English.
The offer includes a fully funded 1-year contract, with the possibility of a 2-year extension. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,546 to €5,538, with additional benefits such as holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, sabbatical leave, and professional development programs. The University of Twente is committed to diversity and inclusion, offering flexible working conditions to support work-life balance.
To apply, candidates should submit a CV, motivation letter, and list of publications online before January 1, 2026. The selection process includes review by a committee, followed by interviews and a possible presentation. For substantive questions, contact Full Professor Martijn Mes at [email protected]. This is an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers passionate about AI, LLMs, and their transformative impact on banking and financial technologies.
