Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography ARCNL

Postdoc vacancy: Terahertz microscopy and imaging on 2D heterostructures

The Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL) invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on terahertz (THz) microscopy and imaging of 2D heterostructures. This project aims to expand ARCNL's terahertz time domain microspectroscopy and imaging capabilities, applying THz emission microscopy to investigate the properties of 2D materials and heterostructures at micrometer scales. The research utilizes femtosecond lasers and nonlinear optical techniques to generate and detect terahertz pulses, enabling advanced measurement of material properties. The position is part of the Teratom project, led by the Technical University Eindhoven and funded by the National Growth Fund NXTGEN Hightech programme, which supports future-proof high-tech equipment. The Light/Matter Interaction group at ARCNL specializes in developing new optical and optical/acoustic hybrid metrology modalities for nanolithography, with projects ranging from ultra-high frequency photoacoustics to THz emission spectroscopy and laser damage studies in semiconductor materials. The group offers access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, including multiple femtosecond laser systems. ARCNL is a public-private partnership between the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), VU University Amsterdam (VU), and ASML, a leading semiconductor equipment manufacturer. Located at Science Park Amsterdam, ARCNL houses approximately 100 scientists and support staff, fostering a dynamic and open environment for high-impact research in fundamental physics and chemistry relevant to nanolithography and the semiconductor industry. The postdoc appointment is full-time (40 hours/week) for 2.5 years, with a competitive salary (scale 10, CAO-OI) and a comprehensive range of employment benefits. ARCNL provides support for housing and visa applications for international postdocs, compensates transport and furnishing expenses, and offers the possibility of the '30% ruling' tax agreement for non-Dutch applicants. The institute is committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Applicants must have a PhD in physics, physical chemistry, or a closely related field, with a strong interest in optics, ultrafast lasers, and electronics. Experience with femtosecond lasers, terahertz time-domain generation and detection, or nonlinear optics is highly advantageous. Excellent English communication skills are required. For further information, contact Professor Paul Planken ([email protected]). Applications should be submitted online via the provided link. Online screening may be part of the selection process.
