Link between climate-induced heat and patterns of violence

A fully funded PhD studentship is available at the University of Exeter’s European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH), Penryn Campus, Cornwall, starting in the 2025/26 academic year. The project investigates the relationship between climate-induced environmental stressors, especially heat, and patterns of violence in the UK, focusing on health impacts and inequalities. Research will use quantitative methods, including linking weather data with violent crime and domestic abuse reports, quantifying health impacts, and engaging stakeholders from policy, healthcare, and law enforcement. Applicants from climate science, psychology, public health, environmental science, law, mathematics, or computer science are encouraged to apply, with essential skills in data analysis and programming. Home students receive full tuition and a stipend of at least £20,780 per year for four years; international students receive partial tuition coverage but must self-fund living and other costs. The project is supervised by Prof Gesche Huebner, Dr Frederike Garbe, Prof Peter Cox, and Dr Cornelia Guell. The studentship is funded by UK Research and Innovation and is part of the Net Positive Centre’s initiative to pioneer net-positive solutions for climate and health. The application deadline is December 28, 2025. Interested candidates should review eligibility, prepare application materials, and contact supervisors for informal discussions.
