Investigating how young brains process fast-paced screen media

The Institute for the Science of Early Years (ISEY) at the University of East London is offering two fully funded PhD studentships as part of a Leverhulme Trust project investigating how young brains process fast-paced screen media. The research will use advanced techniques such as EEG, fNIRS, and wearable recordings to study real-time information tracking in babies and children exposed to dense screen media. The project is supervised by Prof Sam Wass and Prof Davidson (both UEL), Prof Rachel Barr (Georgetown), and Dr Sarah Jessen (Lübeck), providing a multidisciplinary and international supervisory team. Applicants should have experience in advanced data analytics and coding (Matlab/Python), with additional experience in neuroimaging or wearable data collection from infants/children considered a plus. A strong passion for neuroscience, early development, and innovative research methods is essential. The studentship covers UK Home tuition fees and provides a maintenance grant of £21,237 per year for three years, with extra funding available for conferences and fieldwork. Start dates are available in September 2025 or January 2026.
