Oceanic Photosynthesis: Molecular Mechanisms to Climate Change
Project Overview:
Oceanic photosynthesis is a fundamental process that underpins marine ecosystems and supports critical ecosystem services, including global carbon cycling and climate regulation. Despite its importance, our ability to predict the future status of ocean photosynthesis under changing climate conditions remains limited. This PhD project at the University of Southampton's School of Ocean and Earth Sciences aims to unravel the molecular mechanisms driving oceanic photosynthesis and assess their responses to environmental change.
Research Focus:
The project will integrate approaches from molecular biology, bioinformatics, marine biology, and ecology to investigate how marine photosynthetic organisms, such as phytoplankton, adapt and function in a changing ocean. You will explore biodiversity patterns, gene expression, and physiological responses to environmental stressors, contributing to improved predictive models of ocean productivity and climate feedbacks.
Supervision and Environment:
The supervisory team includes Prof T Bibby, Dr T Ryan-Keogh, Dr S Long, and Dr P Lam, who collectively bring expertise in marine sciences, molecular biology, and environmental research. The University of Southampton offers a vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art laboratories, fieldwork opportunities, and interdisciplinary collaborations within the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have a strong background in biology, marine science, environmental science, or a related field. Experience or interest in molecular biology, bioinformatics, or marine ecology is desirable. English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers.
Funding:
Funding details are not specified in the current announcement. Prospective applicants are encouraged to check the project link or contact the supervisors for the latest information on available funding or studentships.
Application Process:
The application deadline is 8 January 2026. Interested candidates should apply online via the University of Southampton's postgraduate application portal, referencing the project title. Prepare a CV, academic transcripts, and a personal statement outlining your suitability for the project. Informal inquiries to the supervisors are welcome.
