PhD Opportunities in Information Systems, Digital Innovation, and Smart Cities at LSE

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Department of Management is offering multiple pathways to join its PhD program in Information Systems and Innovation. The flagship MPhil/PhD in Management (Information Systems and Innovation) is designed for those interested in digital innovation, AI strategy, and technology transformation, providing rigorous training in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Students will engage with a vibrant academic community and have opportunities to specialize in areas such as digital ecosystems, organizational technologies, security, privacy, and the impact of technology on organizations and society. A special Bloomberg Philanthropies PhD Studentship is available for research at the intersection of cities and technology, focusing on smart cities, urban innovation, and digital governance. This studentship is fully funded, covering tuition and providing a generous stipend, and encourages collaboration with city governments and urban governance networks. It is open to students of all nationalities and supports research that addresses the critical uncertainties facing European cities in the coming decade. Additionally, the Visiting Research Studentship allows current PhD students from other institutions to spend up to one academic year at LSE, building international networks and collaborating on cutting-edge research. Applicants must have the support of an LSE faculty member and meet the entry requirements for research programs, including English proficiency. All programs are highly competitive and require strong academic backgrounds, with specific requirements for prior degrees and, in some cases, recommended standardized test scores. The application deadline for the main PhD program is 14 January 2026, while the Visiting Research Studentship has rolling admissions. Interested candidates should apply through the LSE application portal and follow the specific instructions for each pathway. For the Bloomberg Studentship, a separate funding application is required. For more information, visit the program websites or contact the relevant program managers.
