About this position

The Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and Society (LIAS) at Leuphana University Lüneburg is offering 12-month postdoctoral fellowships in residence for the 2027/28 academic year, starting April 1, 2027 and ending March 31, 2028. The program, titled "Culture and Society in Transformation," seeks to foster engaged scholarship that challenges prevailing discourses and explores new possibilities in times of global transformation and polycrisis. Researchers are invited to submit projects that address the actors, narratives, conflicts, and practices involved in transformative processes, as well as the historical, socio-cultural, epistemological, political-economic, legal, and techno-scientific conditions of living together in an interconnected world.

LIAS encourages interdisciplinary and international research, supporting projects that think across hemispheres and contribute to the realization of plural societies. The institute values methodological openness, critical diagnosis of the present, and cultural inventiveness. Fellows are expected to work in residence, participate actively in LIAS events, and may organize public formats and workshops. Collaboration with Leuphana University researchers and participation in university activities are also encouraged.

Eligibility requires a PhD obtained within ten years prior to the fellowship start, with two to three years of outstanding postdoctoral work. Fluency in English is mandatory. The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of €2,100 (tax free), accommodation, travel expenses, and a family allowance if applicable. Office space is provided, and support is available for fellows relocating with families.

Applications must include a completed application form, cover letter, academic CV with publications, and a project proposal (up to 5 pages/2,500 words) detailing the research question, contribution to the field, methodology, and relevance to the LIAS program. The deadline for submission is January 5, 2026. Applications should be sent as a single PDF to [email protected]. For more information and application guidelines, visit the official LIAS website.

Leuphana University Lüneburg encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and diverse backgrounds, with preferential consideration for candidates with disabilities in accordance with German equal opportunity guidelines.
