About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, supervised by Dr Masoud Sajjadian, Professor Patrick James, and Dr Stephanie Gauthier, focuses on developing a simulation-based, multi-objective optimisation framework to create healthier UK housing. The project will systematically investigate how various housing design parameters influence key indicators of user health and comfort, using advanced building performance simulations. It will also pioneer new research into the use of comfort standards in simulations, broadening their application and impact. Data-driven methods in architectural design will be explored, with the intention of producing practical guidelines and a decision-support framework for designers and policymakers to foster healthier and more sustainable buildings.

As a doctoral researcher, you will gain expertise in integrating simulation tools, optimisation algorithms, and multi-objective decision-making techniques into a unified framework. This will enable the evaluation and comparison of alternative building design scenarios at early design stages. The project will culminate in a comprehensive set of design guides, supported by simulation and experimental evidence, to inform best practices in healthy and sustainable housing design.

Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in architecture or architectural engineering.
