About this position

Cornell University’s Automation and Robotics Lab is recruiting fully funded PhD students for Fall 2026 under the supervision of Dr. Lirong Xiang, Assistant Professor in Biological and Environmental Engineering. The research focuses on agricultural robotics and automation, AI, deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, robotic system design, and intelligent mechanical and electrical systems.

The lab collaborates with federal agencies and industry partners to develop technologies that enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. The position offers full tuition coverage, a minimum annual stipend of $47,548, health insurance, and travel support for conferences, with opportunities for performance-based stipend increases.

Applicants should hold or expect to earn a B.S. or M.S. in Agricultural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, and demonstrate interest or experience in robotics, automation, AI, or computer vision. Proficiency in C++, Python, and ROS is required, along with strong communication and teamwork skills. Experience in system design or research is a plus.

What's required

Applicants must have or expect to earn by Fall 2026 a B.S. or M.S. in Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related fields. Required qualifications include demonstrated interest or experience in robotics, automation, AI, or computer vision; proficiency in C++, Python, and familiarity with ROS; strong written and oral communication skills in English; and ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Experience in mechanical or electrical system design and prior research experience are considered a plus.
