About this position
The Quantum Materials for Renewable Energy Applications Laboratory in the Department of Chemistry at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) is searching for a highly motivated doctoral student to design highly efficient quantum materials for thermoelectric materials. The position is fully funded, and the starting date is January, May or September 2025. Earlier starting dates might be possible and can be discussed. Note, the candidate can obtain a PhD in Chemistry or Physics .
The project goals include (1) the computation of thermoelectric properties using advanced density functional theory (DFT), (2) the synthesis and characterization of quantum materials, and (3) the measurements of the thermoelectric properties.
The student will learn to perform DFT calculations on large computer clusters and develop Python scripts to analyze the computed data. The computed data will be used to guide the experimental studies. The student will synthesize the samples using solid-state reactions and grow large single crystals using the Bridgman method. To optimize the thermoelectric properties, our laboratory has recently developed a script to efficiently optimize the materials. The samples will be characterized using X-ray diffraction techniques and scanning electron microscopy and the thermoelectric properties will be measured as a function of temperature.
The student will disseminate their findings in high-impact journals and international conferences. During their training, the student will learn to efficiently communicate their work.
Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in applied science (Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science) and engineering
- Advanced understanding of materials chemistry and physical properties
- Strong English communication skills in writing and speaking.
Strongly recommended but not required.
- Computational background
- Experimental background in materials synthesis and characterization
- Advanced knowledge of electrical and thermal properties
