Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Green Chemistry and Technology, focusing on the UPLIFT project: “Upcycling Lignin Biorefinery Waste through Thermal Conversions.” This multidisciplinary project, funded by Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO), aims to convert lignin—a major biorefinery byproduct—into high-value products for industrial applications such as phenolic resins, surfactants, polyurethanes, and flame-retardant materials.
The successful candidate will join the Thermochemical Biomass Conversion Research Group (TCCB), led by Prof. Frederik Ronsse, and collaborate with partners including VITO’s Sustainable Polymer Technology group and Hasselt University’s Analytical and Circular Chemistry research group. The research will involve (hydro)pyrolysis of lignin residues to produce lignin-oil rich in phenolic compounds, and the fractionation of these oils for use by project partners. Experimental work will include fast pyrolysis on laboratory-scale setups, hydropyrolysis in autoclave reactors, and operation of fractional distillation equipment.
