About this position

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a PhD position titled 'Doctoral Researcher in AI for AR Neurosurgery.' This opportunity is based within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), a leading research and innovation hub in secure, reliable, and trustworthy ICT systems. The doctoral candidate will join the Computational Mechanics (Legato) group and participate in the Doctoral Programme in Complex Systems Science, contributing to the CART-4D project—a collaboration between the University of Luxembourg and ARSPECTRA.

The research focuses on developing advanced AI and AR solutions for neurosurgery, including error-controlled biomechanical models for real-time use on AR devices, Bayesian neural-network surrogates, graph-based models for tissue deformation and brain shift, and integration with ARSPECTRA's software stack (marker tracking, SLAM, gaze tracking). The project also involves participation in phantom and clinical studies with CHL, offering a unique blend of computational, medical, and industrial collaboration.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in computational mechanics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Essential skills include numerical methods, finite-element analysis, and programming in C++ and/or Python. Experience with SOFA, FEniCSx, or similar simulation frameworks is highly valued. Candidates must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis, with accepted certificates as specified by the university. Motivation to work at the intersection of mechanics, AI, and medical technology, and willingness to collaborate with industrial and clinical partners is essential.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, multilingual, and international environment, with high-quality equipment and close ties to industry and society. The position is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Belval Campus. The yearly gross salary for every PhD at the University of Luxembourg is EUR 41976 (full time).

To apply, submit your application online through the University of Luxembourg HR system, including your CV, cover letter, and transcripts. Early applications are encouraged as review is ongoing. Applications by email will not be considered. The university promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
