About this position
The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a doctoral researcher position in Electric Mobility & Energy Optimization, hosted within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). This PhD opportunity is part of the FNR-CORE funded ENER-G project, which focuses on empowering networks of e-buses for resilient and green mobility. The research will address optimal e-bus charging infrastructure and fleet management, considering Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) connectivity, integration of local renewable energy sources, battery storage systems, and dynamic pricing schemes. The goal is to explore how these technologies and strategies can lead to substantial cost savings for bus operators and provide additional benefits for energy actors and green energy exploitation.
The doctoral project will begin with a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art, followed by the development of advanced optimization formulations. Efficient algorithms will be designed and tested on realistic transport and energy networks using real-world data from energy and public transport operators. The expected outcomes include novel optimization models and solution algorithms that advance the state-of-the-art in electric fleet planning, integrated transport, and energy management systems. The research is anticipated to result in at least three high-impact journal publications and presentations at prestigious international conferences.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Viti, with additional support from Dr. Ma and a dedicated postdoctoral researcher. The successful candidate will join the Mobilab Transport Research Group, a dynamic and multidisciplinary team with expertise in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and social sciences. The group is part of BIVEC, offering access to post-graduate courses in Belgium and the Netherlands. The training program will be tailored to the candidate's background and framed by a Doctoral Education Agreement (DEA) to be signed within six months of starting.
Applicants should hold a MSc in applied mathematics or engineering, possess strong analytical and numerical skills, and have knowledge of optimization, operations management, and programming (preferably Python). Experience with optimization solvers such as Gurobi or CPLEX and knowledge of infrastructure design, planning, and management are assets. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, international, and stimulating research environment, with high-quality equipment and close ties to industry and society. The position is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time (40 hours per week), based at the Belval Campus. The annual gross salary for PhD researchers is EUR 41,976. The university promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
To apply, candidates should submit their application online via the University of Luxembourg HR system, including a CV, cover letter, and contact details for three referees. Early applications are encouraged, as review will begin upon receipt. Applications by email will not be considered.
