About this position

The University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy invites applications for a 4-year Doctoral Researcher position in Philosophy, beginning January 12, 2026 or as agreed. This position is part of Professor Jari Kaukua’s research project, Illuminationist Philosophy in the Islamic World (ISHRAQ), funded by the Research Council of Finland. The ISHRAQ project investigates the philosophical legacy of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī from the 13th to 17th centuries CE and aims to create an online database of Illuminationist texts.

The appointed Doctoral Researcher will focus on writing a doctoral dissertation on Shams al-Dīn al-Shahrazūrī within the ISHRAQ project. The role involves research, doctoral studies, some teaching assistance, and related academic tasks. The position offers a vibrant, international, and multidisciplinary research environment, with a strong sense of community and support for professional growth.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a completed Master’s degree in Philosophy or a closely related field. Sufficient knowledge of classical Arabic is required to work with untranslated primary sources. Proficiency in English is essential, and a strong academic record is advantageous. The selected candidate must secure the right to postgraduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä through a separate application process after selection. Funding: The position is fully funded for four years, with a starting salary of approximately 2500 €/month (gross), increasing as the thesis progresses, in line with the Finnish Education Employers’ Collective Agreement.
