About this position

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) in Jena, Germany, is offering a Doctoral Researcher Position in Infectious Diseases as part of the DFG-funded NeurInfect Research Training Group. This interdisciplinary program investigates the biological mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric sequelae following infections, with a particular focus on the microbiome, neuroinflammation, and cognitive and behavioral consequences. The successful candidate will utilize murine models to explore how gut microbiota composition influences pneumonia-induced neuroinflammation and its impact on cognition and behavior.

The position provides a highly qualified research and training environment, promoting the translation of experimental findings into clinical applications and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. The structured qualification program offers theoretical and methodological foundations for the doctoral project, supported by an experienced team from neuroscience, infection/immunology, and clinical medicine. Supervision is provided by Prof. Ilse Jacobsen (HKI) and Prof. Christian Geis (UKJ), both renowned for their expertise in microbial immunology and infection-related neuroinflammation. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure in both research groups.

Applicants must hold an internationally recognized degree (master’s, diploma, or state examination) in life sciences or medicine, with a minimum overall grade of 75%. Essential qualities include independent and structured work habits, strong initiative, determination, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills. The position is limited to three years, with salary paid according to German TV-L (65% E13).

The HKI is committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applications from all backgrounds. To apply, submit your cover letter, CV, previous work, letters of recommendation, and references via the Leibniz-HKI application system by March 20, 2026. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. For further information, consult the official application link provided.
