About this position
The University of Eastern Finland invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher/Project Researcher position in Data-Driven Drug Design at the School of Pharmacy, Kuopio Campus. This fixed-term position runs from 1 May 2026 (or as agreed) until 31 December 2028 and offers a unique opportunity to join the Data-Driven Drug Design (4D) group, leveraging world-class supercomputing resources such as CSC and the EuroHPC supercomputer LUMI. The successful candidate will also be part of the DrugTech Research Community and have the chance to undertake an exchange period with the Kronenberger lab in Tübingen, Germany, focusing on joint AI-driven research initiatives.
The research centers on molecular modeling and data-driven drug discovery, with a core emphasis on long-timescale Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations for large multimeric proteins, large-scale virtual screening (VS), and the integration of AI concepts into drug discovery pipelines. Key responsibilities include conducting and analyzing MD simulations to characterize drug target dynamics, developing computational workflows that incorporate modern AI and machine learning (such as surrogate models and adaptive sampling strategies), and disseminating research findings through publications and conference presentations.
The position is open to candidates with a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline. For the PhD track, applicants must be eligible for postgraduate studies and registered as a postgraduate student at the University of Eastern Finland or plan to complete their doctoral dissertation there. Essential skills include experience in molecular modeling methods for drug design and proficiency in English, as it is the language of instruction and supervision. Additional advantages are independent work capability, problem-solving, effective communication, collaboration, programming skills (especially in natural science or AI-related areas), and a track record of scientific publications.
The salary is determined by the Finnish university salary system, with a job-related salary element of EUR 2,281.48/month (level 2) and a personal salary element ranging from 6% to 50% of the base, resulting in a starting salary of approximately EUR 2,510–2,780/month. Staff benefits include flexible multi-location work, occupational health care, training opportunities, lunch discounts, and affordable sports services. The University of Eastern Finland is a multidisciplinary institution with campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio, offering a vibrant, international, and inclusive academic community. Finland is renowned for its cleanliness, welfare, technology, and education system, providing a safe and attractive environment for researchers.
