About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a PhD position in Production Engineering, with a focus on advanced machining systems, machine tools, and control systems. The project aims to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and productivity of modern manufacturing by advancing the integration of high-performance machine tools and intelligent control systems. These mechatronic systems utilize sensors, real-time metrology, and advanced control to monitor and optimize machine dynamics, thermal behavior, and positioning.
The doctoral research will involve analyzing mechanical, thermal, and dynamic properties of machine tools, as well as developing and calibrating digital models that combine physics-based and data-driven approaches. The goal is to improve process predictability and overall machine performance. The project offers a balance of experimental and theoretical work, and is conducted in close collaboration with international research partners and industry, providing excellent opportunities for advanced experimental research.
The successful candidate will join the Manufacturing and Metrology Systems unit and the Precision Engineering and Metrology (PEM) group at the Department of Production Engineering. The group, comprising around 15 researchers, collaborates closely with industry through Centre X – Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Next-Generation Powertrains at KTH. Supervision will be provided by Professor Andreas Archenti, a leading expert in the field.
Applicants must hold a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the second-cycle level), or possess equivalent qualifications. Proficiency in English (equivalent to English B/6) is required. A background in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, or related fields is essential, and experience in control systems, metrology, or machine tools is advantageous. Selection will emphasize personal skills, including the ability to work independently and collaboratively, a professional approach, and strong analytical abilities.
The position is full-time, with employment up to four years, renewable annually or biannually, and includes a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement and employee benefits. The workplace offers a creative and dynamic environment, with a commitment to equality, diversity, and professional development.
Applications must be submitted through KTH's recruitment system and include certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of language proficiency, a CV, an application letter (max 2 pages), and representative publications or technical reports. The deadline for applications is March 21, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Andreas Archenti at [email protected].
