About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in computational modelling of zinc-metal batteries. This opportunity is based in the Stenlid lab at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, where research integrates advanced computational chemistry, materials modelling, and surface science to address fundamental challenges in energy storage technologies.

The project focuses on rechargeable aqueous zinc-metal batteries, which are promising for affordable, safe, and sustainable energy storage using abundant and recyclable materials. A key challenge is understanding and controlling parasitic interfacial reactions at the zinc–electrolyte interface, such as dendrite formation, corrosion, and by-product generation. Unlike conventional Li-ion batteries, these zinc batteries operate in aqueous, pH-dependent environments, requiring mechanistic, atomic-scale insights into interfacial chemistry for improved durability and recyclability.

As a doctoral student, you will employ a broad range of computational methodologies, including atomistic and electronic-structure–based materials modeling, machine learning, high-throughput methods, and ab initio calculations of electrochemical reaction kinetics. The project is highly collaborative, involving close work with experimental groups, particularly the Maibach group at the Division of Materials Physics, which contributes advanced materials characterization and battery cell testing.

The position is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency’s “Sustainable Battery Value Chain” research program and encourages multidisciplinary collaborations, including research visits to national and international research groups. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers is renowned for its research in chemistry, materials science, renewable energy, and chemical engineering, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree for those educated outside Sweden) in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field. Strong English communication skills are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with quantum chemistry, computational chemistry tools, electrochemistry, batteries, energy storage, programming (Python or similar), and prior research experience. Physical presence in Sweden is mandatory throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The doctoral position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, extending the position to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and doctoral students at Chalmers are employees with full benefits.
