Doctoral Student in Economics – up to 6 positions Uppsala University in Sweden

Uppsala University’s Department of Economics invites applications for up to six doctoral student positions in Economics, starting August 2026. The PhD program is designed to prepare students for both academic careers and high-level positions in the private and public sectors. As a doctoral student, you will focus primarily on your own research and studies, benefiting from a vibrant intellectual environment with frequent research seminars and international visitors. The position is full-time for four years, with the possibility of extension for up to one additional year through departmental duties such as teaching. Employment is regulated by the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and university guidelines, ensuring a structured and supportive framework for your doctoral studies.

The program covers a wide range of fields within economics, including Mathematical Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Labour Economics, Development Economics, Political Economy, Behavioural Economics, Financial Economics, Corporate Finance, and Public Economics. You will have the opportunity to engage with leading researchers and participate in seminars that foster academic growth and collaboration.

Eligibility requirements include a master’s degree or equivalent (at least 240 ECTS credits, with 60 at the advanced level), and at least 90 ECTS credits in economics or equivalent knowledge. These requirements must be met by the program start date in August 2026. Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the GRE, with results sent directly to the department (School code 0247, Department code 1801). If GRE results are not provided, equivalent mathematical proficiency must be demonstrated through university studies in mathematics. Proficiency in English is essential, and can be shown through previous university studies, extended stays in English-speaking countries, or TOEFL/IELTS test results.

Required documents include a cover letter (max two pages), CV, certified copies of degrees and transcripts, a copy of your master’s thesis or another thesis, and contact details for two academic referees. Referees will receive instructions to upload recommendation letters, which must be submitted by 3 February 2026. Applicants are responsible for ensuring timely submission of these letters.

Successful candidates will receive full-time employment for four years, with salary and benefits according to university regulations.
