About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in energy technology and policy, based in the Energy Technology and Policy (ENTAP) group within the Division of Physical Resource Theory. The group focuses on interdisciplinary research connecting technical and social sciences to address sustainability challenges, including climate change, energy transitions, and sustainable land use. The research project is linked to the MISTRA Electrification initiative and aims to develop data-driven methods for technology foresight and policy analysis in low-carbon technologies.

Two doctoral positions are available: one emphasizes technology foresight, developing probabilistic modelling approaches for emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and energy use from data centres; the other focuses on policy analysis, leveraging machine learning to investigate the effectiveness of various policy mixes in accelerating technology change. The ENTAP group offers a strong international network and tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration, providing a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or a 4-year Bachelor's degree for those educated outside Sweden) in energy studies, environmental science, complex systems studies, economics, public policy, political science, or related fields. Mandatory requirements include experience in energy transitions research, strong analytical skills in quantitative modelling, data analysis, scientific computing (R, Python), and excellent English communication skills. Experience in technology foresight modelling or quantitative policy analysis is advantageous. Doctoral studies require physical presence in Sweden throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), and includes employee benefits. The appointment is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20% (extending the position up to five years). Chalmers offers a supportive environment, including Swedish language courses, generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, with initiatives such as the GENIE project.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the provided application form. Required documents include a CV, personal letter (indicating whether you apply for the technology- or policy-focused position), thesis and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is May 4, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Jessica Jewell at [email protected].

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in engineering, science, shipping, and architecture, fostering innovation and global collaboration for a sustainable world. The university was founded in 1829 and continues to promote scientific excellence and technical solutions for societal challenges.
