Current and emerging research interests within the department include crises and conflicts, visual and literary journalism, journalism’s changing epistemologies, AI and verification regimes, exile journalism, local journalism and community engagement, as well as climate journalism and sustainable development. Doctoral students benefit from involvement in national and international research networks and close multidisciplinary cooperation with Media and Communication Studies and Media Technology at Södertörn University.

The doctoral studentship includes admission to third-cycle education (PhD level) and employment at the School of Social Sciences. The programme comprises 240 credits, equivalent to four years of full-time study, with the possibility of extension for departmental duties (up to 20% of full-time) or other approved absences. The intended outcome is the award of a PhD. Employment conditions and regulations are governed by the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

Applicants should hold a relevant Master’s degree and demonstrate a strong academic record and research interest in journalism, media studies, political science, or related fields.
