Early-Stage Researcher – PhD Student in Aquatic Ecosystem Research and Health University for Continuing Education Krems in Austria

The University for Continuing Education Krems, located in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau, Austria, is offering a PhD position for an Early-Stage Researcher in the Research Lab for Aquatic Ecosystem Research and Health at the Faculty of Health and Medicine. This part-time (30 hours/week) position is embedded in a third-party funded (FWF) research project and is initially limited to three years. The project investigates the physiological and neurobiological effects of dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on aquatic invertebrates, specifically using Daphnia spp. as model organisms. The research combines experimental ecology, lipid biochemistry, neurophysiology, and behavioural ecology to elucidate how dietary lipid quality affects neuronal membrane composition, receptor function, perception, and behaviour, with broader implications for ecosystem functioning and human health.

Key responsibilities include designing and conducting laboratory experiments on dietary manipulation in aquatic invertebrates, cultivation and experimental handling of Daphnia species, analysis of lipid composition using chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques (GC-FID, HPLC-MS/MS, MALDI-MS imaging), neurobiological analyses (immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy), behavioural assays (phototaxis, predator cue perception), electrophysiological measurements, field sampling of zooplankton, statistical analysis and interpretation of experimental data, publication of research results, presentation at conferences, and contribution to project coordination and supervision of student assistants. The successful candidate will complete the PhD program in Regenerative Medicine at the University for Continuing Education Krems and submit a dissertation within three years.

Applicants must have a university master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline, a strong interest in experimental and interdisciplinary research, laboratory experience, willingness to conduct field work, ability to work independently and in an international team, knowledge of Python or R, and very good English skills (minimum B2). Desirable qualifications include basic knowledge of analytical chemistry, neurobiology, or behavioural ecology, and experience with invertebrate species. The position offers a minimum salary of EUR 3,776.10 gross per month (14x) on a full-time basis, classification as scientific project staff member, and extensive benefits such as further training opportunities, health promotion programs, and access to the University Sports Institute (USI).
