This fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Edinburgh, supported by the EastBio Partnership, focuses on the dynamic measurement and manipulation of metabolism in plant stem and differentiating cells to control cell fate. The project investigates the redox chemistry of cells, which serves as a proxy for metabolic activity and is increasingly recognized as a key determinant in cell fate decisions and maintenance. Redox state varies across cell compartments and tissues, yet current tools for monitoring and manipulating these states with high spatial and temporal resolution are limited.

To address this, the research combines sub-cellularly targeted, biologically encoded reporters with advanced physico-chemical approaches, including surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), to measure dynamic redox changes with exceptional resolution. The project leverages a newly acquired microscope capable of simultaneous fluorescence and Raman imaging, alongside engineered nanomaterials for detecting specific molecules at high resolution. Interventions using nanozymes and pharmacological agents will be employed to explore how redox state influences cell fate, laying the foundation for targeted expression of master regulators to shift developmental trajectories. These strategies have significant implications for disease treatment, tissue regeneration, and the industrial production of cell-derived products.

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in Raman and fluorescence imaging, as well as in the cultivation of cells, plants, and tissue models. Collaboration with CPI, a non-academic partner supporting UK biotechnology innovation, will further enhance the research experience. Experience or interest in organic chemistry, cell biology, imaging, or nanomaterials is advantageous. International candidates must meet English language requirements. The position is open to UK and international students, with funding covering stipend and UK level tuition fees; the University of Edinburgh covers the difference for international fees.
