About this position

PhD position: "Groundwater Tracers and Age Dating" with Prof. Jeff B. Langman, [email protected] (Department of Earth and Spatial Sciences, University of Idaho, USA)
------------
We invite PhD applicants to participate in a recently funded collaborative research study to evaluate groundwater recharge at the margin of the flood basalts composing the Columbia River Plateau. This study will use a traditional groundwater age-dating technique and a hypothesized relative age indicator to discriminate faster or slower recharge zones along a mountain front to improve our understanding of groundwater residence time and influences on groundwater recharge. This study will build on recent work that used noble gases and d2H and d18O values to infer faster and slower pathways into this highly heterogeneous aquifer system. The PhD student will perform a high-intensity sampling of wells in the margin alluvium for analysis of chlorofluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride, per- and polyfluorinated substances, and the stable isotopes of water. Additionally, the student will conduct a synthesis of new and existing tracer data for evaluating aquifer dynamics because of variable recharge along the basin margin. This project represents a developmental process to increase our understanding of recharge in these complex fractured-basalt systems to better estimate the effects of increased withdrawals, drought, and(or) artificial/enhanced recharge.

Applicants must have a degree in geochemistry, hydrology, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience using groundwater tracers. Stipend, healthcare, and tuition coverage are covered. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The position will remain open until filled. The University of Idaho regards equity and diversity as an integral part of academic excellence and is committed to accessibility for all employees. If you have any questions regarding the application process and eligibility, please contact Prof. Jeff Langman, [email protected] . In your application email, please provide a CV and motivation for applying for the position along with contact information for three references.
