About this position
The Circular Process Engineering Laboratory (CPEL) at Dalhousie University, a leading Canadian research institution, is offering a fully funded PhD position starting Summer 2026. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about clean-energy solutions, catalysis, and sustainable biofuel production. The research focuses on catalytic pyrolysis, the development and characterization of novel catalysts, and the conversion of biomass and waste-derived feedstocks into high-value fuels and chemicals. The project directly supports Canada’s transition to low-carbon, circular-economy technologies and is highly interdisciplinary, integrating chemical engineering, environmental engineering, materials science, and clean-energy systems.
PhD students will conduct experimental pyrolysis studies, analyze product streams, and may engage in reaction modeling or sustainability assessments (LCA/TEA) based on their interests. The lab environment is collaborative and supportive, with tailored technical and professional development opportunities, access to academic conferences, networking events, and industry partnerships for practical experience. Dalhousie’s Faculty of Engineering requires PhD students to complete at least four courses, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis defense over approximately four years. Students benefit from health and dental plans, subsidized local transit, and other university services.
Applicants must have a MASc/MSc in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field, with strong academic performance and research ability. Interest in catalysis, thermochemical conversion, or bioenergy is essential. Preferred skills include catalyst synthesis and materials characterization (BET, XRD, SEM, TGA), pyrolysis or thermochemical conversion experience, reactor operation, analytical instrumentation (GC–MS), process modeling, and sustainability assessments. Proof of English proficiency is required for non-native speakers. The lab values equity, diversity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from underrepresented groups.
To apply, submit a single PDF with your CV, unofficial transcripts, a one-page research statement, and contact information for two references to [email protected]. The subject line should read 'PhD Application – Catalytic Pyrolysis & Biofuel Research'. The application deadline is October 1, 2026 (Summer 2026 intake). Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. For more details, visit the CPEL website or contact Dr. Khaled Benis.
