The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Diversity in Data Visualization at City St George’s, University of London, in collaboration with the University of Warwick, is offering 8 fully funded PhD studentships starting October 2026. This innovative programme is designed for students passionate about the power of data and the potential of visualization to drive understanding and change across science, industry, and society.

As a PhD researcher with Diverse CDT, you will engage in interdisciplinary research in data visualization, collaborating across both City St George’s and the University of Warwick. The programme emphasizes cohort-based learning, allowing you to work alongside peers on cutting-edge data visualization projects. You will benefit from research-in-practice internships with leading academic and industrial partners, including the Natural History Museum, Ordnance Survey, and the Centre for Applied Education Research. Training covers data analysis, visual design, user experience, and digital notebooks, equipping you with state-of-the-art skills for a career in data visualization.

The studentship includes a tax-free stipend of £23,158 per year for four years (with annual increases), full payment of UK Home tuition fees, a high-spec laptop for the duration of your studies, and up to £3000 for research activities. You will also have the opportunity to undertake 3-6 month internships across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors, and participate in global exchange opportunities with leading data visualization research labs. Both full-time and part-time study routes are available, but the programme requires in-person attendance and regular commuting distance to your university.

Eligibility is open to UK (Home) applicants, those with pre-settled or settled status, indefinite leave to remain, and a limited number of international applicants exempt from ATAS. Applicants should have or be close to completing an undergraduate degree involving work with data (e.g., Geography, Sociology, Health Sciences, Business, Politics, Psychology, Computer Science), a postgraduate qualification involving data, or substantial experience working with data and an interest in visualization. The programme strongly encourages applications from individuals whose perspectives and experiences are under-represented in data visualization, including female, BAME, and low-income applicants.

This CDT is a collaboration between City St George’s, University of London, and the University of Warwick, bringing together expertise in data visualization, human computer interaction, sociology, and creativity in leadership. The University of Warwick’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies further enhances the programme’s breadth, supporting innovative and experimental research approaches. As a Diverse CDT student, you will develop a thematic lens to data visualization aligned to your unique interests and contribute to a more inclusive and impactful field.
