About this position

A fully funded PhD position in Ecohydrology is available at South Dakota Mines under the supervision of Dr. Edson Costa-Filho, Assistant Professor of Water Resources Engineering. The research focuses on developing a hybrid approach to estimate ecosystem surface resistance in the Penman-Monteith model for actual crop evapotranspiration, integrating advanced ecohydrological modeling and high-resolution satellite remote sensing. The project is ideal for students with a strong background in Civil or Environmental Engineering and a keen interest in sustainable water management, hydrology, and environmental engineering.

Applicants should hold B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or a closely related field) by August 2026. Candidates must demonstrate experience or strong interest in ecohydrological modeling, satellite remote sensing, and environmental engineering. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, ArcGIS, or QGIS is required. The ideal candidate will be a great communicator, problem-solver, resilient, and fluent in English.

The position offers a monthly stipend and full tuition remission, with the project running from August 2026 to May 2030. Applications are accepted via an online form, and the deadline for submission is March 1, 2026. Review of applications is on a rolling basis, and only top candidates will be contacted for a Zoom interview. For more information, visit the supervisor’s academic page or contact Dr. Edson Costa-Filho directly at [email protected].
