About this position

A fully funded PhD position is available in Stimuli-Responsive Coordination Chemistry at Utrecht University, within the Organic Chemistry and Catalysis (OCC) group. The project is jointly supervised by Dr. Daniël Broere (Utrecht University) and Dr. Devin Boom (TNO), and focuses on developing a new class of stimuli-responsive ligands for dynamic and reversible modulation of metal–ligand interactions. The research aims to redefine how metals can be captured, released, and recovered, supporting next-generation circular technologies for sustainable metal recovery.

The project combines computational ligand design, synthetic coordination chemistry, spectroscopic characterization, and electrochemical separation techniques. It is embedded in a larger interdisciplinary consortium on battery recycling and urban mining, offering exposure to broader perspectives on technology implementation and socio-economic impacts. The research group is internationally recognized, and more information can be found at broerelab.com.

Applicants should have a Master’s or equivalent degree in chemistry or a closely related field, with a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry and coordination chemistry. Experience with computational chemistry, electrochemistry, and photochemistry is desirable. Candidates must demonstrate good communication skills, the ability to work independently and in teams, and proficiency in English.

The position is fully funded, with a fixed-term full-time appointment for 18 months, extendable to 4 years upon positive evaluation. The salary is based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (Scale P), and Utrecht University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including professional development and cultural activities. The starting date is flexible, ideally before Q3 of 2026.

To apply, send your application (motivation letter, CV, references, and transcripts) to Dr. Daniël Broere at [email protected], including 'NGF-PhD-UU' in the subject line. For more details, visit the provided links.
