About this position

This fully funded PhD studentship at Imperial College London offers an exciting opportunity to join an international research consortium focused on enabling local knowledge production for water security. The successful candidate will be based in the Hydrology and Water Resources Laboratory within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, under the supervision of Professor Wouter Buytaert and co-supervision of Dr Alexandra Collins from the Centre for Environmental Policy. The project features key collaborations with Dr Seifu Tilahun (International Water Management Institute, Ghana) and Dr Fabian Drenkhan (Pontifical Catholic University of Lima, Peru), providing a truly global research network.

Water security is a major societal challenge, especially in regions where hydrometeorological monitoring networks are sparse and data access is limited. This project leverages advances in environmental sensing and data processing technologies, including the Internet of Things, to create new opportunities for data collection. A central focus is on citizen science and participatory monitoring, which have surged globally and offer innovative ways to gather environmental data. However, transforming this data into actionable, locally relevant knowledge and fostering equitable collaborations remains a significant challenge.

The interdisciplinary PhD will analyze existing citizen science initiatives and develop new technologies and approaches to support data collection, analysis, and integration into decision-making processes. The research group has a strong track record in participatory monitoring and expertise in environmental sensing and IoT technologies, providing a supportive and dynamic environment for the student. The project is ideal for candidates with a keen interest in new technologies, experience in international fieldwork, and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.

Eligibility requirements include a First Class Degree (or international equivalent) in environmental engineering, environmental sciences, or a related field, as well as a Masters level qualification. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for collaborative and interdisciplinary research, possess excellent English communication skills, and have strong writing and presentation abilities. Experience in international fieldwork and stakeholder engagement is highly valued.

The studentship provides full funding for four years, covering international tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the standard UKRI London rate.
