Looking for a challenge? We are hiring 2 PhD students and 1 post-doc for inter-disciplinary research on fluid mechanics, control and machine learning. You will be part of the MIRO core lab of Flanders Make at Ghent University and SBO project PICASSO, with Joris Degroote , Guillaume Crevecoeur , Abdellatif Bey Temsamani , Jeroen De Maeyer and Patrick Debal .

PICASSO will ensure that controllers for machines that incorporate coupled interaction between air and a moving and/or deforming structure (yarn, fibre, particle, droplet, ...) can be both efficiently designed and realized. Examples of such machines are textile machines and agricultural machines, and the leading Flemish companies in this field are part of the advisory board.

We will develop control strategies that can achieve faster commissioning and have improved real-time adaptive tuning capabilities. To achieve this, we require faster simulation environments, more accurate characterization of the various process uncertainties, improved control, and controllers that are better informed about real-time behaviour of the process (e.g. through vision sensors). To support this, we will develop tools to leverage state-of-the-art fluid-structure interaction models to ensure that the influence of uncertainties and variations can be estimated and quantified based on sensor information.
