The University of Strathclyde’s Institute of Photonics (IoP) is offering two Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Candidate positions (DC1 & DC2) as part of the MINDnet Doctoral Network. These fully funded PhD opportunities are based in the Neuromorphic Photonics and Neurotechnologies groups within the Physics Department, located in Glasgow, UK. The research focuses on neuromorphic photonic-electronic integrated circuits for brain-inspired information processing and sensing, as well as the development of efficient learning algorithms for closed-loop optogenetic control of neural circuits.

Successful candidates will join an international research team supported by the EU-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). The PhD projects will be supervised by Professors Antonio Hurtado and Keith Mathieson, and will benefit from collaborations with other programmes at the IoP and the wider Physics Department. The positions include secondments of at least three months at partner institutions across Europe, regular meetings with other doctoral candidates in the network, and participation in training schools and workshops.

Applicants must hold a suitable degree in a relevant field such as physics, electrical engineering, neuroscience, or computer science. Candidates must not already possess a doctoral degree and should demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge in neuromorphic computing, photonics, or neurotechnologies. MSCA eligibility rules require that candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before recruitment. Compulsory national service, short stays (such as holidays), and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status are not counted towards this residency requirement.

The funding package includes a total of £51,045 for the 36-month contract, covering salary and associated benefits. Formal interviews will be held in April 2026.
