About this position
This MSCA-funded doctoral researcher position at Tampere University focuses on multimodal perception and sensor fusion for mobile working machines, a critical area for industries such as construction, mining, and agriculture. The project is part of the ENGAGE network, which brings together leading machine manufacturers and technology companies across Europe to advance green, autonomous, and digital solutions for smart machinery. The doctoral researcher will investigate sensor configurations and machine learning methods for real-time machine perception, including implementation on actual machines. Scientific objectives include exploring calibrated and synchronized data streams from cameras, Lidars, radars, IMUs, and GNSS systems; developing perception methods for rich multimodal data; advancing real-time sensor fusion in autonomous machine contexts; quantifying uncertainty from multimodal data; and researching self-supervised learning approaches using co-occurring signals.
Training will cover state-of-the-art topics in multimodal perception, 3D sensing, machine learning-based sensor fusion, and state estimation. The candidate will also participate in network dissemination activities via social media and digital platforms.
The position is full-time for three years, with employment split between Tampere University (Finland, 12 months) and Bosch Rexroth (Germany, 24 months). The target degree is a doctoral degree from Tampere University. The gross salary is approximately 3800 EUR/month in both countries, with family allowance if applicable, and is defined according to MSCA rules.
Applicants must hold an MSc in a relevant engineering discipline or applied mathematics, be eligible for doctoral studies at Tampere University, and comply with the MSCA Mobility Rule. Proficiency in English is required, and experience in computer vision, machine learning, deep learning, and 3D sensors is valued. The application deadline is November 16, 2025, and early applications are encouraged as interviews may begin during the application period.
