This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on developing nanoscale quantum optoelectronic platforms for next-generation neuromorphic systems. The project involves optoelectronic device fabrication and characterization, analysis of excitonic and charge transport properties, and integration with photonic sources to realize optoelectronic neural networks. Students will join the Flexible Nanoelectronics Lab and work in the Optoelectronics Research Centre, with opportunities to collaborate with UK and European research partners through the UK Multidisciplinary Centre for Neuromorphic Computing. The program offers hands-on training in quantum materials deposition, device nanofabrication, optoelectronic engineering, and photonic system integration, with access to advanced cleanroom and optical characterization facilities. The interdisciplinary nature of the project provides skills in materials science, nanotechnology, photonics, and neuromorphic computing, preparing graduates for careers in quantum-enabled technologies and AI hardware.
Funding is competitive, with UK students eligible for a 4-year UKRI TechExpert stipend (~£31k/year), and studentships at the UKRI base rate available for EU, Horizon Europe, and international students.
