University of Exeter | In collaboration with GABA Labs & Prof. David Nutt
We’re offering a fully funded PhD to investigate how GABAergic interventions—like non-alcoholic functional drinks (e.g. Sentia)—alter brain activity, cognition, and subjective experience.
While alcohol is known to enhance GABA activity (relaxing, social, anxiolytic effects), safer and more targeted alternatives are urgently needed. This studentship will explore how GABA-enhancing compounds affect the human brain using EEG, behavioural experiments, and computational modelling.
?? You’ll tackle questions such as:
How do GABA-based drinks compare to alcohol in modulating neural and behavioural states?
Can we identify biomarkers of response or cognitive enhancement?
Key methods & skills:
EEG & signal analysis
Experimental psychology (attention, mood, anxiety paradigms)
Computational modelling & biomarker discovery
Subjective state assessments
Ideal for candidates interested in:
Neuropsychopharmacology
Computational psychiatry
Consciousness science
Translational neuroscience
?? Start: Sept 2025
?? Fully funded (Home only, sorry!), £20,780 tax-free stipend
?? Based at the Washington Singer Labs, University of Exeter
This is a rare chance to join an interdisciplinary collaboration between academic neuroscience and a leading neurotech startup.
