England faces increasing challenges in long-term water security, with predictions of significant supply shortfalls in coming decades. These issues are already impacting commercial and industrial sectors, as some water companies have restricted non-domestic water supplies due to resource limitations. With sectors like data centres and high-tech industries prioritized for growth in water-stressed areas, the need for innovative solutions is urgent. Water reuse—reclaiming wastewater streams for non-drinking purposes—offers a way for commercial sectors to meet their needs without adding pressure to public water services.
The successful candidate will have flexibility in designing their research approach, utilizing a wide range of social science methods. Key commercial sectors include data centres, high-tech industries, and food and beverage production. The industrial partner, Anglian Water, is the largest water and wastewater company by area in England and a leader in sustainable water management and innovation. This collaboration advances Anglian Water’s ongoing work in water reuse and supports practical challenges across the UK water sector, including nature-based solutions, low-carbon treatment technologies, and resource efficiency.
Results from this research will help water companies and retailers understand the needs and concerns of non-household customers regarding water reuse. Findings will inform sector strategies and regulatory discussions, supporting broader adoption of water reuse while managing associated risks. The project is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Water Infrastructure and Resilience (WIRe), which offers bespoke training in technical and personal skills and access to world-leading experimental facilities. The candidate will also have opportunities for international placements.
The WIRe programme is inclusive and welcomes applications from all highly motivated individuals, regardless of background, identity, or disability. Graduates will be well positioned for successful careers in the water sector or academia, equipped with transferable skills in communication, project management, leadership, and an international network.
Entry requirements include a first or upper second-class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. A relevant MSc is desirable but not essential. Experience in the water sector is welcomed. Suitable backgrounds include Geography, Environmental Studies, Sustainability Studies, Business (with environmental risks), Water or Civil Engineering, or related social science degrees. Candidates must have experience or understanding of qualitative and quantitative social research methods, be self-motivated, possess strong communication skills, and show interest in applied social science research and water sector governance.
Funding covers a tax-free bursary of £25,726 per annum and tuition fees for four years, with additional training and placement costs covered. The studentship is open to both Home and Overseas fee status students, though limited places are available for Overseas students. Eligibility for Home fee status follows UK Department for Education rules.
