PhD and Master's Fellowship Programmes in Ageing Research at Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) University of Cologne in Germany

The Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research (CGA) at the University of Cologne offers comprehensive PhD and Master's fellowship programmes in the interdisciplinary field of ageing research. The CGA is a joint venture with the University Hospital Cologne, Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research, and the CECAD Cluster of Excellence. The programme is conducted entirely in English and provides state-of-the-art research facilities, intensive supervision, and a vibrant international environment.

Research areas span DNA damage and repair, genetics and epigenetics, immunology and inflammation, membrane and lipid biology, metabolism and nutrient sensing, mitochondrial biology, neuroscience and neurodegeneration, protein homeostasis, RNA metabolism, stem cells and tissue regeneration, systems biology, bioinformatics, and tumour biology. Students benefit from a structured curriculum including lecture series, journal clubs, scientific retreats, and career development mentoring. The thesis advisory committee ensures systematic guidance and annual progress reviews.

PhD candidates are selected during an on-site recruitment week, where they can visit laboratories of their choice. Up to 12 candidates are admitted annually, with programme start dates between 1 July and 1 October. Master's fellows receive hands-on training, regular mentoring, and participate in CGA events early in their careers. The programme includes international guest lecturers, language training, and intercultural skills courses. Internships abroad are optional, and students have access to exchange programmes and international meetings.

Funding is available for all PhD students, who receive a work contract with social benefits, health insurance, and 30 days of vacation for three years. Payment is based on the German public salary scheme TVL-E13 at 65% (approx. 3,010 EUR monthly gross salary in the first year) or an equivalently remunerated contract from the Max Planck Society. If the PhD project extends beyond three years, continued funding is provided. An annual travel grant for conferences is included. The semester contribution is approx. 305 EUR, covering public transport in Germany. Living costs are estimated at 986 EUR per month.

Applicants must hold an MSc or equivalent in relevant fields (biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, bioengineering, pharmacology, neuroscience, translational medicine) and have sufficient research experience. Applications are accepted if the Master's degree is pending but must be awarded before the programme start. Outstanding Bachelor's degree holders may apply for the Master's fellowship. Excellent English skills are required. Due to the programme's intensity, part-time employment elsewhere is not possible.

Accommodation is available through the student union or private housing market, with rent ranging from 200 to 500 EUR for single rooms.
