About this position

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) Research School "Digital Health" at the University of Potsdam offers an innovative PhD and postdoctoral scholarship programme in conjunction with the Faculty of Digital Engineering. This faculty is a joint initiative between HPI and the University of Potsdam, providing a unique environment for research in computer science and digital technologies. The programme is primarily conducted in English and welcomes doctoral candidates and postdocs from around the world.

Research at HPI focuses on the intersection of digital health, computer science, and public health. The school covers a broad spectrum of health-related research, including prevention, diagnostics, therapy, and protection. Projects span both individual and population-level health challenges, supporting precision medicine, personalised therapy, and public health interventions. Topics also address global healthcare issues such as ageing populations, obesity, workforce shortages, costs, and equitable access, as well as economic aspects of digital health.

Students benefit from close supervision by experienced professors and postdocs, access to cutting-edge research facilities, and a collaborative academic network with partners such as the University of Cape Town and the University of California Irvine. The advising structure is based on a thesis advisory committee model, ensuring comprehensive support throughout the research journey. Regular meetings, presentations, and annual retreats foster a dynamic and international research environment, with opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange with Mount Sinai Graduate School (New York, USA) and South African partners.

There are no tuition fees for the programme, except for a semester administrative fee (currently 322 EUR), which includes a public transport ticket for Germany. The average monthly living expenses are around 935 EUR, depending on accommodation. The HPI Research Schools annually grant new full scholarships to PhD candidates and postdocs, offering an excellent research environment, mentorship, access to computing resources, and significant travel funding. Scholarships are not subject to income tax.

Applicants must submit a CV, certificates/transcripts, a brief research proposal (mentioning suitable HPI research groups), work samples (such as a Master's thesis), and a letter of recommendation. Academic requirements include a supervision agreement, report of intent to pursue doctoral studies, university transcripts, and a CV in tabular form. While no specific language certificate is required, proficiency in English is expected. Application details and submission instructions are available at this site.

The University of Potsdam offers numerous job opportunities for students, both on campus and in nearby Berlin. Accommodation options include student dormitories and private apartments, though the housing market is competitive. The university provides structured research training, supervision, and career advisory services, including workshops, seminars, and individual counselling. International students are supported through welcome events, buddy programmes, tutors, and visa assistance, ensuring a culturally sensitive and inclusive experience at HPI.
