About this position

This PhD position at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN) offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the effect of lead (Pb) chemistry on hydraulics in lead-cooled nuclear reactors, with a particular focus on small modular reactors (SMRs) and the MYRRHA Accelerator Driven System. Belgium is exploring SMRs as a key component of its strategy for a sustainable, net-zero energy future by 2050, and liquid lead is the coolant of choice due to extensive national expertise with heavy liquid metals (HLM) such as lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE).

The research will address fundamental questions about how impurities and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the coolant influence the formation of solid oxides, corrosion of structural steels, and the nucleation and growth of PbO particles. These chemical processes have significant impacts on reactor hydraulics, including changes in liquid flow resistance and apparent viscosity, which are not yet fully understood. The project aims to clarify the mechanisms and conditions under which these hydraulic changes occur, especially during reactor maintenance and other operational events where DO levels fluctuate.

As a PhD researcher, you will join the SCK CEN Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology, benefiting from a multidisciplinary and international research environment. You will collaborate with experienced experts and have access to state-of-the-art facilities designed for nuclear experiments. The SCK CEN Academy also offers excellent internal training courses to support your academic and professional development.

Eligibility requires a Master of Science degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, or Chemical Engineering, with a strong background in one of these areas and excellent English language skills. The PhD is expected to last four years, and you will be part of a vibrant research community in Mol, Antwerp.
