Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) is offering two PhD Fellowship positions in Journalism and Media Studies within the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences. These positions are connected to the department’s PhD programme and are designed for candidates interested in advancing research in journalism, media production, and communication. The department is recognized as one of the leading media research environments in the Nordic countries, providing a vibrant and creative academic setting in downtown Oslo.

Applicants are expected to propose research projects that align with ongoing departmental activities and contribute to one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence in the media sector, journalism and media in war and conflict, press freedom and safety of journalism, platform power and 'big tech', media industries and production, digital journalism, polarization, media narration across text, image, and sound, science journalism, climate/environmental journalism and communication, media practices, audience relations and transformations, and the development of research methodology relevant to journalism and media studies.

The fellowship appointments are for three years, with the possibility of a four-year contract including 25% teaching and administrative duties. Fellows will benefit from organized research training and are expected to pursue independent research under supervision, based on their project proposal. Participation in the Faculty of Social Sciences' PhD programme is required.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Journalism, Media Studies, or a related field, or a 90 ECTS master’s degree with a substantial thesis component. Additional requirements include advanced methodological knowledge, a peer-reviewed scientific article or book chapter, or relevant research experience. A grade B or better on both the master’s thesis and the overall degree is required. Proficiency in English is essential, and knowledge of a Scandinavian language is advantageous. Experience in research projects and academic publishing is considered beneficial.

The salary is set according to the Norwegian state wage scale for Research Fellows (NOK 550,800 per year), with pension and welfare benefits.
