About this position

The Circular Process Engineering Laboratory (CPEL) at Dalhousie University is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on catalytic pyrolysis for sustainable biofuel production. This research opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in designing, synthesizing, and characterizing novel catalysts, optimizing pyrolysis reaction pathways, and advancing thermochemical conversion strategies to upgrade biomass and waste-derived feedstocks into value-added fuels and chemicals. The project will involve catalyst development, catalytic pyrolysis experiments, product characterization, and optional modeling or sustainability assessments to support efficient and sustainable biofuel production.

Applicants should hold a MASc/MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field. Strong academic performance and demonstrated research ability are required, along with an interest in catalysis, thermochemical conversion, bioenergy, or related fields. Proof of English language proficiency is necessary for international applicants. Preferred qualifications include experience in catalyst synthesis and materials characterization (e.g., BET, XRD, SEM, TGA), pyrolysis experiments, reactor operation, analytical instrumentation (e.g., GC–MS), process modeling or simulation tools, and sustainability assessments or circular-economy concepts.

Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Engineering provides a supportive and dynamic research environment, with tailored technical and professional development opportunities. Students will have access to academic conferences, networking events, and industry partnerships to gain practical experience and explore real-world applications of their research. Graduate students benefit from health and dental plans, subsidized local transit, and other services. The PhD program requires completion of a minimum of four courses, a comprehensive examination, and a thesis over approximately four years.

The position is fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend, with additional support for conference travel and professional development. The start date is Summer 2026, and applicants based in Canada will be prioritized. The application process requires submission of a single PDF file containing a CV, unofficial transcripts, a one-page statement of research interest, and contact information for two references. Applications should be emailed to [email protected] with the subject line: 'PhD Application – Catalytic Pyrolysis & Biofuel Research'. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
