The project is conducted within a unique ecosystem at Université Laval, in collaboration with the Centre de Recherche du CHU de Québec (CR-CHUQ-UL) and clinical experts in radiation oncology. The student will work at the interface of medical physics and materials science, contributing to the development of innovative biomaterial technologies and radioactive treatments. Applicants may pursue the PhD through one of two academic paths: Medical Physics and Related Technologies (6 courses × 3 credits) or Materials Engineering (4 courses × 3 credits), leading to career opportunities in medical physics, clinical radiation sciences, implant technologies, and biomedical engineering applied to cancer treatment.
Essential requirements include a Master’s degree in materials science or engineering, surface chemistry, biomedical engineering, engineering physics, applied physics, medical physics, or nuclear science and technology (1st class or upper 2nd class Honours, or equivalent). Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic and research background, experience in 3D printing (FFF, resin printing, or both), motivation for multidisciplinary research, excellent communication and analytical skills, and the ability to work independently. Desirable skills include experience with CAD software, radioisotope handling, surface science, electroplating, and prior research experience. Applicants must meet Université Laval’s PhD eligibility criteria. The main teaching and working language is French, and candidates are expected to learn French within three years.
The position is open to both Canadian and international students. Funding includes a stipend of $27,500/year (tax free at the provincial level, minimum federal income tax), renewable upon demonstrated good progress, supported by a CIHR research grant (2026-2031). Students are responsible for complementary funding for living expenses and medical insurance (for international students).
