The PhD programme in Environmental and Resource Management at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) offers an international, interdisciplinary research environment focused on current environmental issues. The programme is designed to foster both qualitative and quantitative research in scientific, technological, and economic aspects of environmental sciences, strengthening BTU's research profile in areas such as Global Change, Transformation Processes, Energy Transition, Decarbonisation, Health, and Life Sciences.

Doctoral candidates conduct individual research projects within the broad field of environmental and resource management, supported by integration into a diverse group of researchers and students. The programme is affiliated with the Faculty of Environment and Natural Sciences, and research topics are assigned to one of the university's chairs, allowing students to contribute their own institutional experience.

The structured curriculum spans three years (six semesters) and includes five compulsory modules (30 ECTS) aimed at developing research, methodological, and transferable skills essential for academic and professional careers. Modules cover academic research and methods, progress reports, research colloquium, grant proposal writing, and thesis writing skills. The written PhD thesis (120 ECTS) and oral examination (30 ECTS) are individually assessed. All courses, seminars, and examinations are conducted in English, and students must be present during lecture periods (April–July and October–February).

BTU provides additional workshops through its Graduate Research School, focusing on networking, subject-specific qualifications, scientific techniques, and transferable skills. The Continuing Education Department and individual coaching services support academic and professional development at various stages.

International elements include guest lecturers, collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad, and thematic references to global contexts. While tuition is free, students pay a semester fee of 374 EUR, which covers student services and the Student Council. Living expenses are estimated at 780–1,000 EUR per month, including rent, groceries, health insurance, and miscellaneous costs. Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field (Environmental Science, Engineering, Economics, Management, Law, Applied Chemistry, Biotechnology, or related subjects) with a minimum final grade of 2.3 (German system). A comprehensive research proposal aligned with the programme's focus is required. English proficiency must be demonstrated via accepted tests (TOEFL, Cambridge, IELTS) unless exempted by prior English-language study.
