About this position

This fully funded PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to advance the field of immunomodulation for in situ tissue regeneration. The research focuses on harnessing the immune response to degradable synthetic implants, enabling their transformation into living tissues directly at the functional site in the body. The project aims to delineate the combined influences of systemic immunity and local immunomodulation on tissue regeneration, with the goal of elucidating patient-specific immunity and enabling precision targeting of systemic immunity during implantation.

You will be embedded in the ImmunoRegeneration team and the Soft Tissue Engineering and Mechanobiology research group, led by Prof. Carlijn Bouten, within the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The project is part of the DRIVE-RM research program (NWO Summit) and involves close collaboration with University Medical Center Utrecht. You will also be affiliated with the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems, benefiting from a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at TU/e is renowned for its top-level education and research, combining engineering and life sciences to address major healthcare challenges. The university offers a dynamic and ambitious setting, with a beautiful campus, excellent technical infrastructure, and a vibrant international academic community.

Employment conditions include a four-year full-time contract, salary according to Dutch Universities scale P (€3,059–€3,881 gross/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, and a tax compensation scheme for international candidates. You will spend a minimum of 10% of your time on teaching tasks, with opportunities for professional development and high-quality training programs.

Applicants must have a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, a research-oriented attitude, and experience in cell culture. Expertise in immunology and/or tissue regeneration is strongly preferred. The ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, motivation to develop teaching skills, and fluency in English (C1 level) are required.

To apply, submit your application online via the provided link, including a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references. Applications by email or post will not be processed. The position will remain open until filled, with a formal deadline of January 4, 2026.

For further information, contact Anthal Smits (Associate Professor of ImmunoRegeneration) at [email protected] or Sascha Sanchez (HR advisor) at [email protected].
