About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton offers an exciting opportunity to advance the understanding of degradation mechanisms in next-generation thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aerospace and energy applications. Supervised by Dr. Isha Gupta, the research will focus on coatings produced by suspension plasma spray (SPS) and solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS), which are designed to withstand ultra-high temperatures and severe thermal loads in gas turbines and related systems.

Despite their critical role in protecting components, the failure mechanics of these advanced coatings remain poorly understood, especially under extreme thermal and chemical conditions. This project aims to fill that gap by developing robust multiphysics models that describe the degradation of SPS and SPPS coatings during thermal cycling, prolonged high-temperature exposure, and chemical attack from molten sand deposits such as calcia–magnesia–alumino–silicate (CMAS). The research will explicitly account for microstructural features unique to these coating architectures, modeling phenomena such as cracking and delamination.

In addition to computational modeling, the project may involve hands-on experimental testing and damage characterization, providing a comprehensive approach to understanding coating performance. The work bridges aerospace engineering, materials science, and mechanical engineering, and is supported by access to high-performance computing resources and state-of-the-art experimental facilities.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team tackling challenges with direct relevance to industry leaders like Rolls-Royce and Siemens. The project is ideal for students passionate about computational mechanics, fracture mechanics, and the design of high-performance materials for demanding environments.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or aerospace engineering. Essential skills include experience in computational mechanics or multiphysics modeling, with a focus on fracture mechanics and chemo-mechanical degradation. A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary research are highly valued. English language qualifications are required for non-native speakers.
