About this position

A fully funded structured PhD position is available at the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, Athlone, Ireland, in partnership with a global insulation manufacturer. The research project, titled 'Breaking the Unbreakable: Novel Recycling Strategies for Thermoset Insulation Foams,' focuses on developing innovative recycling pathways for legacy polyurethane and polyisocyanurate insulation foams. These materials are critical in modern energy-efficient construction but are challenging to recycle due to their crosslinked thermoset structure and complex formulations.

The successful candidate will investigate advanced chemical depolymerisation, catalytic and thermochemical processes, and precision materials characterisation to recover valuable chemical building blocks. The project will provide expertise in reaction chemistry, polymer analysis, spectroscopic and thermal techniques, and circular materials engineering. Short industry placements will allow the student to test recycling strategies with real materials and industrial workflows, conducted in partnership with a leading international insulation manufacturer.

In addition to technical research, the student will complete a structured professional development programme focused on innovation, leadership, commercial awareness, and entrepreneurship. Training includes intellectual property, research commercialisation, project management, and strategic decision-making. The student will work with multidisciplinary teams, engage with mentor networks, and participate in industry innovation activities, gaining first-hand experience in translating scientific discoveries into real-world applications.

Funding includes a €31,000 annual stipend and full tuition fees for 48 months. Applicants must hold a primary degree (2.1 or higher) in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, with a strong interest in sustainability and materials innovation. Experience in business, entrepreneurship, or innovation is preferred, and candidates must demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively in both lab and industry environments. International candidates require an IELTS score of 6.0 minimum (no band below 6.0).
