About this position
This PhD project at Aston University investigates the optimisation of visual performance in athletes through the use of custom-made lenses. Visual performance is a key factor in athletic success, especially in fast-ball sports where split-second decisions can determine outcomes. Despite elite athletes often having superior baseline vision, many compete with less-than-optimal optical correction, potentially limiting their performance.
The research will focus on three main areas: (1) vision screening of professional athletes to identify visual defects such as refractive errors and anisometropia, which can impact depth perception and binocular coordination; (2) providing the most suitable visual correction, including standard soft contact lenses or specialist lenses for higher order aberrations; and (3) training athletes to enhance reaction times and coordination using advanced vision testing methods such as time-release visual acuity, dynamic acuity, contrast sensitivity, eye-tracking, and ocular dominance assessment. Improvements in these visual abilities will be tracked alongside sport-specific performance metrics.
The project aims to generate effect size estimates for future large-scale studies and to develop evidence-based guidelines for vision correction protocols in elite sports. The research is based at the Aston Campus in Birmingham, UK, and the successful candidate will be expected to attend campus regularly.
