About this position

Utrecht University School of Economics is offering a fully funded four-year PhD position focused on the financing of the transition to regenerative agriculture in the Netherlands. The position is part of the ReGeNL project, which aims to support 1,000 Dutch farmers in adopting regenerative agricultural practices. The research will address how nature-inclusive transitions in agriculture can be financed at the farm, supply chain, and regional levels, considering the roles of both public and private stakeholders. The PhD candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community, collaborating with colleagues from law, sustainability, and economics, as well as with other ReGeNL PhD students at Dutch universities. The project is closely linked to the Sustainable Finance Lab and involves both literature review and qualitative empirical research, including fieldwork with farmers and stakeholders. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Helen Toxopeus and Dr. Friedemann Polzin. Applicants should have a research master's (or academic master's with strong research credentials) in a relevant field, experience or interest in qualitative research, and fluency in Dutch and English. The position offers a competitive salary, full benefits, and professional development opportunities. The application deadline is November 9, 2025, with interviews scheduled for November 19, 2025. For more information or questions, candidates can contact Dr. Helen Toxopeus at [email protected].
