About this position
PhD Opportunity: Inherited Networks – The Intergenerational Transmission of Social Networks
Radboud University’s Department of Sociology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the NWO-funded SHINE project. This research focuses on how social network connections and resources are transmitted from parents to children, contributing to the understanding of intergenerational inequality. The project will examine differences in network inheritance between advantaged and disadvantaged families, identify which aspects of networks (such as size, composition, resources, and overlap) are passed down, and analyze the mechanisms parents use to transmit social capital across socioeconomic groups.
The theoretical framework integrates social capital theory, network sociology, and stratification research, exploring how inherited networks reproduce advantage and disadvantage across generations. The research design involves both quantitative and qualitative methods, including the analysis of existing panel data, new surveys, multilevel regression, longitudinal panel analysis, and qualitative insights into parental transmission strategies. Dutch language proficiency is required for this position.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Sociology or a related Social Science field and possess skills in network analysis, quantitative methods, and qualitative research. Proficiency in Dutch is mandatory. The position offers a 4-year fully funded contract, a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881 (full-time), 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, flexible employment, pension, and parental leave.
Supervision and Collaboration: The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Roza Meuleman and Margriet Van Hek, collaborating with postdoctoral researchers and senior scholars within the SHINE project. The team values diversity and inclusivity, welcoming candidates from all backgrounds, genders, and identities.
Application Process: To apply, submit a cover letter (motivation and fit for the project), CV (including extra-curricular activities and work experience), diplomas, transcript of courses/grades, proof of English proficiency, contact information for two references, and a Master’s thesis (or draft with title) in PDF format via the application portal. The application deadline is 8 March 2026 (23:59 CET). Interviews will be held online on 13–14 April 2026 with the ICS board and project supervisors. Invitations will be sent after 24 March 2026. For more information, contact [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity for highly qualified graduates interested in social networks, inequality, and advanced research methods to join a dynamic and inclusive research environment at Radboud University.
