Description

The Duarte Campos Lab at the Centre for Molecular Biology Heidelberg (ZMBH), Heidelberg University, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join a cutting-edge project on xolographic biofabrication of in vitro vascularized tissue models. This research is part of the Cluster of Excellence 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O), a collaboration between Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, aiming to advance 3D additive manufacturing and biofabrication technologies.

The project focuses on developing and characterizing vascularized in vitro tissue models using xolography, a novel volumetric printing technique that enables the rapid, contact-free creation of intricate, perfusable vascular networks. Unlike traditional bioprinting, xolography uses intersecting light fields to generate entire 3D constructs within seconds, minimizing mechanical stress on cells and allowing for high spatial resolution. The research has significant implications for tissue engineering, disease modeling, and drug testing.

As a PhD student, you will work on tasks such as preparing and handling natural and synthetic bioinks, performing 2D and 3D cell culture, refining xolographic fabrication parameters, tuning bioink stiffness, and conducting histological and immunofluorescence staining, two-photon imaging, and qPCR. The lab offers an international and collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art infrastructure at both Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Applicants should have a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or a related field. Preferred qualifications include experience with hydrogels, 3D (bio)printing, microscopy, cell culture, and/or microfluidic systems. Strong academic achievements, excellent English skills, and motivation to work in a diverse team are essential.

The position is funded according to the TV-L scale (E13), 75% appointment for two years with the possibility of extension. The anticipated start date is April 1, 2026. Applications should be submitted as a single PDF (including a letter of motivation, CV, transcripts, and names of 2-3 referees) to Prof. Daniela Duarte Campos at dcampos@uni-heidelberg.de by November 28, 2025. For more information, visit the lab's website.

Heidelberg University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. Qualified female candidates and individuals with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

Funding

The position is funded according to the TV-L scale (E13), with a 75% appointment (29.625 hours/week) for two years, with the possibility of extension. The salary is competitive and includes full access to state-of-the-art infrastructure at Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. No tuition fees are mentioned.
