About this position

This Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) funded PhD project focuses on developing innovative acoustic and ultrasound-based predictive maintenance systems for industrial equipment, specifically targeting power converters used in a wide range of applications such as industry, photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles, and data centers. Conventional maintenance strategies often rely on fixed schedules, which can lead to premature replacement of components and increased electronic waste. The aim of this research is to create a non-invasive, low-cost ultrasound monitoring approach to assess the state of health and remaining useful life (RUL) of power converters across various industries.

The project will investigate ultrasonic signatures emitted by aging electronic components, using advanced signal processing and AI techniques, including compressed sensing and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), to model degradation mechanisms. By combining experimental studies with computational modeling, the research seeks to detect early signs of failure and enable predictive maintenance strategies that can be executed locally through edge deployment. This approach promises to improve reliability, reduce waste, and optimize maintenance schedules for industrial equipment.

The PhD will be conducted within a prestigious MSCA Doctoral Network, offering international training, interdisciplinary collaboration, and secondments at leading academic and industrial partners in Italy and the Netherlands. The network provides a unique opportunity for professional development, exposure to cutting-edge research, and engagement with experts across Europe.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in signal processing, applied physics, electrical/electronic engineering, or data science, with a strong interest in physical systems. A solid foundation in power electronics and AI techniques is essential, along with motivation for interdisciplinary research. Candidates must comply with the MSCA mobility rule, which requires that they have not resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months in the past 3 years. Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is mandatory.

Funding is provided through the MSCA Doctoral Network, covering stipend, training, and secondments. The application deadline is July 31, 2026. For more information, visit the project page or apply directly via the provided application link.
